woman with piggy bank - hvac rebatesIf you’re in the market for a new air conditioning system or have a unit that is over 10 years old, you may want to replace it sooner rather than later.

Effective July 1, 2017, the Independent Electricity Operator (formerly Ontario Power Authority) will be making significant changes to its Save on Energy rebate program for air conditioners.

Current Air Conditioner Rebate Offer – Ending June 30, 2017

  • $250 Rebate. To qualify, homeowners must install EnergyStar rated air conditioning systems with a 14.5 SEER and a 12 EER rating.
  • $400 Rebate. To qualify, homeowners must install EnergyStar rated air conditioning systems with a 15 SEER and a 12.5 EER rating.

New AC Rebate Requirements – Effective July 1, 2017

  • Homeowners must install an EnergyStar rated central air conditioning system with an 18 or higher SEER rating.
  • Homeowners may also have to upgrade their furnace to a compatible one (if it does not work with 18 or higher SEER AC).

Is a Higher SEER Rating Necessary?

SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, measures how efficiently you cooling system uses energy. A high rating means a more eco-friendly, efficient system

While a high efficiency rating is great, the higher the rating, the more expensive the machine will be. Additionally, an air conditioner with a SEER rating of 18 cannot operate without a compatible furnace, meaning more costs for you. Changing your air conditioner now means that you will still qualify for a rebate with an efficient model at a lower price.
