Common Air Conditioning Problems

AC Freezing Up

One common reason for an AC freezing up is restricted airflow, often caused by dirty air filters or blocked vents. When airflow is restricted, the evaporator coil can become too cold and freeze the condensation on its surface.

Leaking Water

Water leakage from an AC unit typically indicates a clogged or damaged condensate drain line. When the condensate drain line is blocked, water accumulates in the AC unit and may overflow, causing leaks.

Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant leaks can occur due to damaged or corroded refrigerant lines, fittings, or coils. When refrigerant levels are low, the AC system cannot effectively absorb heat from the indoor air, leading to decreased cooling performance and possibly even blowing warm air.

Not Turning On

Several factors can cause an AC unit not to turn on, including electrical issues such as a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker, a faulty thermostat, or a malfunctioning compressor. Lack of power supply or a malfunctioning capacitor can also prevent the AC from turning on.

Dirty Condenser Coils

Dirty condenser coils can impair the heat exchange process in the outdoor unit of the AC system. Accumulated dirt, debris, or grime on the condenser coils restrict airflow and hinder heat dissipation, so your AC isn’t providing adequate cooling.

Clogged Filters

Clogged air filters restrict airflow and cause the AC system to work harder to maintain the desired indoor temperature. This increased workload can lead to reduced cooling capacity, higher energy consumption, and potential system malfunctions or failures if left unaddressed.

Frequently Ask Questions About Air Conditioning

Do I Need To Repair Or Replace My Air Conditioner?

When your air conditioning unit stops cooling properly, it can be hard to decide if it’s worth emergency ac repair, or if it’s time to get a new air conditioner unit. The first thing to consider is the age of your ac unit. The average lifespan of a central air conditioner is ten years, after which you’ll start seeing higher energy bills as your unit becomes less efficient and you’ll start needing more and more repairs. At a certain point, if you have to repair your air conditioning system frequently, it may be better to replace the cooling equipment altogether. Our expert technicians can help you make an informed decision by doing a full inspection, and help compare the cost of ac repair with new units that may fit your needs better, such as a heat pump or ductless mini-splits.

What To Do Before Turning On My Air Conditioner

Before we are in the middle of a hot summer, there are a few things to verify before turning on your ac unit. Check and clean the condenser and evaporator on your outdoor unit for anything clogging it such as leaves or dirt after a long winter to maintain an efficient unit. The same is true for your air filter and blower fan, they will need vacuuming and to be wiped down in order to avoid needing a service call mid-summer. There are also issues like refrigerant leaks and circuit breakers needing to be switched on that require your attention- but all of these points and more are covered in a standard ac tune-up appointment with licensed technicians.

Why Isn’t My Air Conditioner Turning On?

There could be many different reasons why your air conditioner unit isn’t turning on, or your AC isn’t blowing cold air. There are a few that may be an easy fix to get cold air back into your home. However, others may be more complicated- or like most homeowners, your busy day means you’d rather leave the job to the Vaughan air conditioning repair experts.

  • Thermostat Issues: Make sure your thermostat isn’t broken
  • Tripped breaker: Make sure the breaker is working properly and doesn’t trip every time you turn the AC unit on. This means your circuit is overloaded and you need professional technicians.
  • Frozen coils: Either the evaporator or condenser coils freezing could be because of a lack of airflow. Turn off your unit completely and let the ice melt.
  • Clogged Air Filter: Usually the culprit, as they should be changed every 90 days. A dirty air filter will cause a host of other issues in your air conditioning unit.
  • Condenser Problem: If it is not properly connected to your household it can cause issues and requires help from service technicians to repair.
  • Failed Motor: If the time has come that your motor has died, it may be all the air conditioning repairs you need to fix the issue.
  • Reset Required: If you have a reset switch on your outdoor unit, flipping it on may be all you need to have cool air again in no time.

Air conditioning repair in Vaughan is not always straightforward, sometimes the answer is to have a highly professional team take a look. Scheduling regular maintenance services gives you the opportunity to bring up any concerns at your service appointment.

How Does An Air Conditioner Work?

All air conditioners have four main parts in order for your cooling systems to work. The evaporator, the expansion valve, the condenser, and the compressor. The evaporator uses pressure to convert the liquid refrigerant into gas. A fan then blows the air that has been pumped in from your house over the cooling coils and back into your home.

The expansion valve is located between the evaporator and the condenser, the expansion valve removes the pressure from the liquid refrigerant, allowing the evaporator to do its job. The condenser is the opposite of an evaporator and is located outside. Instead of turning liquid into gas, it turns the refrigerant back into a liquid using a process called heat transfer. The compressor’s job is to re-pressurize the refrigerant gas, once again bringing it back to its liquid form. It then moves the air between the condenser and evaporator.

What’s The Difference Of Ductless vs. Central Air Conditioning?

The two different unit types work in very similar ways:

  • Both consist of two main components: the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser.
  • Both pull in hot air from your rooms and transfer that air’s heat and moisture outside.
  • Both rely on a refrigerant fluid, which is alternately evaporated and condensed to cool your home.

The main difference is that central air conditioning units rely on existing ductwork to circulate the cold air through your home, while a ductless system can be installed in any room individually or with ductless mini splits for multi-units.

Do I Need Air Conditioning Maintenance Services?

Simply put: yes! In order to avoid needing emergency services in your Toronto home, getting maintenance at the beginning of cooling season will make sure your ac system is in top shape, and will let our expert technicians spot any warning signs or issues such as a refrigerant leak before it’s too late. They can then advise any repairs needed and if a new air conditioner installation is needed, they will be able to advise the best unit for your needs with absolutely no hidden charges.

Regular maintenance services also extend the lifespan of your ac unit and help keep your energy bills low with a clean, efficient unit.
